Prior to the start of the new camera trapping season, we prepared a report about the results of this activity in the previous year (2018/19). The cameras recorded at least 19 adult lynx in the Slovenian Dinaric Mountains. There were six females with juveniles, most of them captured on cameras in state’s special purpose hunting grounds. Moreover, two of the lynx that we identified in Slovenia were also recorded in Croatia,...

We prepared a map of lynx habitat occupancy based on SCALP data (Status and Conservation of the Alpine Lynx Population). The data are divided in a three-level classification of field records. The first category (C1) represents ‘hard fact’ data (e.g. good quality and georeferenced lynx photos); the second category (C2) includes confirmed data (e.g. tracks verified by an expert); and the third category (C3) are unconfirmed data (e.g. any kind...

Almost 4 months ago we released into the forests of National Park Risnjak a male lynx Doru. After the release Doru stayed in the park’s area, but in the beginning of June decided to cross the Slovenian- Croatian national border and stayed in Slovenia ever since. Currently he is in Javorniki, moving in the area of around 90 km2. Telemetry data from Doru’s radio collar show that he probably established a territory in this...

More than three months have passed since our first translocated lynx Goru was released from quarantine enclosure in Loški Potok. In case Goru would have returned back, we left the doors of the enclosure open and inside the remains of a roe deer, his last meal before the release. Goru hasn’t returned and is successfully catching his own prey in the wild. But other forest animals have come to check the enclosure and it’s...

We have been monitoring the male lynx Mišo since February 2018, when a Croatian hunter Mihajlo Kovačević captured him on camera at a wild boar feeding facility near Gomirje. After that, we repeatedly photographed Mišo using our camera traps in Gorski Kotar. In December 2018, Mišo was photographed three times in Slovenia in Snežnik area, about 65 km away from the area in Croatia where we recorded it for the first time. Male lynx like...

At the International Lynx Day, LIFE Lynx project organized a field excursion to lynx habitat for the regional summer programme »Summer in Kočevski Rog«. We visited a piece of the core lynx area, where we photographed a female lynx with kittens and another adult lynx, probably a male. The participants learned what kind of locations are the best for setting up a camera trap for lynx; rocky walls and ridges. We explained how we can...

It looks like that our Romanian male lynx Goru has found his territory on Mala gora and maybe also his mate. He met a female lynx Teja, and it looks like they have met more than once. Their radio collar data shows that they first met on June the 1st, that is the first day Goru entered Teja’s territory. Their locations show that they’ve spent 3 days close to one another. Their second “date” was just after 4 days, when again...

In the last two months, we’ve implemented several successful project activities such as translocation of two lynx from Romania to Dinaric forests. Together with hunters, we’ve collected video materials of lynx presence in Dinaric forests. In order to involve and share this experience, and consult about project activities and results with local inhabitants, we’ve implemented the second circle of local consultative...
