LIFE Programme

LIFE is the EU’s financial instrument supporting environmental, nature conservation and climate action projects throughout the EU. It supports projects that contribute to the implementation of the EU’s Birds and Habitats Directives, the Natura 2000 network and that contribute to the EU’s goal of halting the loss of biodiversity.

LIFE programme began in 1992 and to date it has completed four phases. Since 1992, LIFE has co-financed more than 4500 projects. For the 2014-2020 funding period, LIFE will contribute approximately €3.4 billion to the protection of the environment and climate.

The programme is divided into four main themes:

  • Nature, Biodiversity,
  • Environment,
  • Climate Action
  • Info, Governance

The project Preventing the Extinction of the Dinaric-SE Alpine Lynx Population Through Reinforcement and Long-term Conservation – LIFE Lynx falls under the area LIFE Nature and Biodiversity.

LIFE Nature and Biodiversity further contains three thematic sections:

  • Biodiversity issues
  • Habitats
  • Species
