C.2 Lynx Translocation From Romania

Posted - Dec 21, 2017

Live-capture and Translocation of Lynx From the Carpathian Population in Romania for Reinforcement of the Dinaric-SE Alpine Population

The goal of this action is to capture at least seven lynx from three selected areas in the Romanian Carpathian Mountains and translocate them to Slovenia and Croatia. Implementation of this activity will start at the very beginning of the project in 2017. The first task will be to purchase or manufacture all equipment necessary for lynx capture and transport. We will obtain necessary permits for lynx capture from the competent authorities. We will produce a capture protocol to detail all techniques, methods, and procedures necessary for the safe capture, quarantine, isolation, and transport of lynx to selected reinforcement areas. The capture protocols will help the project team avoid common mistakes that can lead to low capture success and to prevent any injuries to the captured lynx. Lynx capture will be initiated in the areas identified as most promising in action A2. We will use box traps on travel routes or if needed, other legal systems for capture. Local Romanian game managers – hunters will be involved to manage capture micro-sites and to minimize any external threats or risks. Following the quarantine period, lynx will be transported to Slovenia and Croatia.
