“Lynx, we warmly welcome you”

Posted - May 4, 2022

The pupils and teachers of the Dragotin Kette Primary School have already proposed names for the lynx, which was recently transported from the Romanian Carpathians to a quarantine enclosure in the Snežnik foothills. In total, 19 names have been collected.

Now an expert committee is at work to select the candidates for the final vote. The name must be short, simple and in any way linked to the local community, the forest, the lynx or the characteristics of cats. This work will be done by the end of the week, and next week the students will choose the winning name. The lynx will be released in mid-May, but of course, it has to have a name by then.

They not only thought of names suitable for the big, beautiful male lynx, but also learned about the characteristics of lynxes and their lives, drew for their lynx corner at school and wrote a poem about the lynx.

You can see the artwork in our gallery (below). They were created by the pupils of  class 5a under the guidance of Mirjana Tomažič, and the poem was written by the pupils of class 7a under the guidance of Dragice Štemberger Maljavac. This is how it goes (translated from Slovenian):

To the lynx…

You came from another country,

with a mission to rescue our lynx and stay.

We warmly welcome you,

every child wants to hug you too.

We hope to see your footprints

you are beautiful and colorful as a lynx prince.

Here the lynx are only few

so when you arrived

the sun was smiling too.

We want to know you better

and help you choose the name than will flatter.
