Matic – a new lynx fitted with telemetry collar

Posted - Feb 19, 2024

In January, researchers from the Biotechnical Faculty – Department of Biology in collaboration with the ZOO Ljubljana’s veterinary team, captured and collared a young male lynx weighing 23.5 kg in the area of Velika Gora near Ribnica. They named it Matic, after a local hunter. It was estimated to be about 3 years old.

Matic, who is most likely a descendant of the lynx Goru, has been recorded several times before in the wider area of Velika gora and Stojna and is thus already known to researchers within the LIFE Lynx project.

The data obtained so far  indicate that it will settle in the this area, neighboring to the very old lynx Mihec (14 years), which had been telemetrically monitored by researchers until mid-2022 and was last photographed with camera trapps in November 2023. Although lynx Matic is currently stabilizing his home range, the researchers presume he will expand it towards Stojna.
