News from Croatia: counting dots and lynx

Posted - Dec 20, 2021

Since 2018, when we set up our first photo traps in Croatia, in the regions of Lika and the northern part of Dalmatia, we have photographed about a hundred different lynx.

About 50% of these animals were photographed on both sides of the body, but for the rest, we had only one side of the body so they couldn’t be counted as a whole. This does not mean that all of the hundred lynx are now present in the area, a large part of them was recorded only in 2018 or 2019. However, every new lynx record is compared with the complete database because of the possibility that a lynx, that was not recorded for several seasons, reappear. In addition to our lynx database , posters like this also help us in our identification work in the office, so we can always take a look in the aisle and check if this lynx was lately recorded.

All in all, it’s a lot of dots and a lot of time, but we’re happy to finally have a better picture of how many lynx actually live in Croatia.
