ERN Rewilding Intro presents LIFE Lynx

March 29, 2021 @ 11:00 - 12:00

This March ERN network is hosting its forth ‘Rewilding Intro’! The goal of these mini-webinars, is to give each member the opportunity to share their story, achievements and expertise, and to further develop beneficial exchange across the network.

This time, our ERN member, the LIFE Lynx project is taking us on a 30-minute long virtual journey through five European countries – Italy, Croatia, Slovenia, Romania and Slovakia. Join us and get a glimpse into the lives of translocated lynx.

At the beginning of 20th century the lynx population in the Dinarics went extinct due to habitat loss, lack of prey species and overhunting. In the 1973, six lynx were reintroduced by hunters and foresters from Slovakia to Slovenia and the animals then expanded to the neighboring countries but remained isolated from other populations. After a few decades, the population started declining and the genetic analyses showed that a few more years are left prior a complete population collapse due to inbreeding.

This is where the LIFE Lynx project stepped in – to rescue the Dinaric-SE Alpine lynx population from extinction.

The Rewilding Intro session will take place via Zoom on Monday, March 29, 2021 at 11.00 CET and welcome Rok Černe, LIFE Lynx Project Coordinator from Slovenia Forest Service.

Register now here and secure your spot!

Rok will speak about how the project is improving the genetic diversity of the lynx population, how it is creating a population “stepping stone” and ensuring the long-term viability. He will also speak about habitat connectivity, translocations, monitoring and give insight into the results so far.
