SUMMARY:Research of wild cats: with Miha Krofel\, from snow leopard to Eurasian lynx
DESCRIPTION:Wild cats such as the lynx\, leopard\, and lion have always captured the imagination of mankind and play an important ecological role in nature. However\, many species remain poorly studied because they are animals that are rarely seen in the wild. So how do we study their lives in the wild? This is what Dr. Miha Krofel will talk about in his lecture at the Dina Centre and Krpan’s House on Thursday\, October 6\, 2022\, at 6 pm. The lecture will be held in Slovenian language. \nDr. Miha Krofel is a Research Associate at the Department of Forestry and Renewable Forest Resources\, Faculty of Biotechnology\, University of Ljubljana. He is also a visiting researcher at the German Institute IZW\, a visiting lecturer at the University of Primorska and the University of Porto\, and a large carnivore expert at the IUCN (Cat Specialist Group\, Canid Specialist Group and Large Carnivore Initiative for Europe). His work focuses mainly on field research on carnivores in Europe\, Asia and Africa. \nThe lecture will be combined with another event\, a presentation of the LIFE Lynx initiative and the Austrian Gravgrav\, The Gravel and backpacking community. \nThe Northern Dinarides are home to large carnivores\, and the LIFE Lynx project has created the Lynx Walk\, a themed hiking trail for nature lovers. The trail runs in the cross-border area of Slovenia and Croatia. It starts at Mašun in Slovenia\, where there is an information and education center called Forest House Mašun and an educational trail about large carnivores\, and from there it follows forest roads to the main entrance of the Risnjak National Park in Croatia\, in Crni Lug. The existing Lynx Walk footpath will be upgraded for cyclists. The cycling route will start at the Dina Pivka Centre\, continue through the area of the Pivka Intermittent Lakes to Mašun\, and from there follow Lynx Walk. \nThe GravGrav community will be involved in the selection of the Lynx Cycle Route\, its promotion and education on sustainable\, animal and habitat-friendly cycling. Representatives of the Austrian group of enthusiastic cyclists will already be with us at the lecture of Dr. Miha Krofl on October 6\, and after the lecture we will focus on the presentation of the initiative for a new cycling challenge\, cycling from the Dina Centre to Crni Lug\, as well as on a way of cycling through forests that does not disturb the animals and at the same time raises awareness about the importance of large carnivores for the conservation of our forests. \nA day later\, on 7 October\, the Austrian cyclists\, accompanied by our team\, will cycle from Dina Center to Mašun\, finding the best route for cyclists and friendliest to large carnivores. They will finish their cycling at the headquarters of Risnjak NP on the Croatian side.

DESCRIPTION:Next Saturday\, on June 11\, 2022\, we are celebrating the International Lynx Day\, which will be celebrated for the first time at the Dina Pivka Centre. The event called “Lynx Day in Pivka” will begin with the opening ceremony at 14:00\, followed by the opening of an exhibition by the academic painter Klarisa Sipoš\, who will exhibit her artworks based on the subject of the lynx\, created in cooperation with the LIFE Lynx project. \nAt 15:00\, you can try out art creativity  at a free painting workshop -“Lynx on the Tip of the Brush”\,  organized by the LIFE Lynx project and guided by Klarisa Sipoš. The workshop is open to applications at info@dinapivka.si\, as participation is limited to 15 people aged 10 to 16. However\, registrations will also be accepted before the workshop if places are still available.

DESCRIPTION:A lecture about the hidden life of lynx in Dinaric forests will be given by Lan Hočevar\, a member of the LIFE Lynx project. \nLan Hočevar is originally from Kočevje and works at the University of Ljubljana\, Faculty of Biotechnology\, Department of Forestry. He spends most of his working time in the wild\, collecting data on wildlife ecology.\nHe researches the ecology of large carnivores\, and is particularly interested in the lynx. In his spare time he enjoys nature photography\, cycling and hiking. DESCRIPTION:This March ERN network is hosting its forth ‘Rewilding Intro’! The goal of these mini-webinars\, is to give each member the opportunity to share their story\, achievements and expertise\, and to further develop beneficial exchange across the network. \nThis time\, our ERN member\, the  LIFE Lynx project is taking us on a 30-minute long virtual journey through five European countries – Italy\, Croatia\, Slovenia\, Romania and Slovakia. Join us and get a glimpse into the lives of translocated lynx. \nAt the beginning of 20th century the lynx population in the Dinarics went extinct due to habitat loss\, lack of prey species and overhunting. In the 1973\, six lynx were reintroduced by hunters and foresters from Slovakia to Slovenia and the animals then expanded to the neighboring countries but remained isolated from other populations. After a few decades\, the population started declining and the genetic analyses showed that a few more years are left prior a complete population collapse due to inbreeding.  \nThis is where the LIFE Lynx project stepped in – to rescue  the Dinaric-SE Alpine lynx population from extinction. \nThe Rewilding Intro session will take place via Zoom on Monday\, March 29\, 2021 at 11.00 CET and welcome Rok Černe\, LIFE Lynx Project Coordinator from Slovenia Forest Service.  \nRegister now here and secure your spot! \nRok will speak about how the project is improving the genetic diversity of the lynx population\, how it is creating a population “stepping stone” and ensuring the long-term viability. Karmen Bajec\, Franc Bešter\, Brut Carniollus\, Barbara Demšar\, Petra Draškovič Pelc\, Andreja Pogačar\, Brigita Požegar Mulej\, Andreja Srna and Alenka Ana Stante produced more than 20 different artworks. From February 13\, 2020 these artworks will be exhibited in Gimnazija Franceta Prešerna Kranj.

Lectures will be held by project team members from Slovenia Forest Service\, Hunters Association of  Slovenia in Biotechnical Faculty. \n \nSinopsisof the film: This film documents the 1973 Eurasian lynx reintroduction efforts in former-Yugoslavia\, when a small group of dedicated and passionate hunters decided to bring six lynx to the Kočevje forests after 65 years of being extinct. Today\, exactly 45 years after that initial reintroduction\, many of the key actors are still alive. We bring their story to life and carefully document this amazing and unique part of Slovenian history. \n  \n  \n
